Podcast Spotlight: Doug Loves Movies

This may be my favorite podcast. Doug Benson, Professional Humoredian, hosts 2-3 guests from the entertainment community in this weekly podcast about movies. Full review after the jump.

Doug Benson may be best known for his pot documentary "Super High Me" or his stand up (CD's Include Unbalanced Load, Professional Humoredian, and his latest Hypocritical Oaf) but he's got a (mostly) free weekly podcast that is just fantastic. Formerly titled "I Love Movies with Doug Benson" it started back in May of 2008 with monthly releases. Doug starts off the show talking about recent movies with his guests, then they play games with prizes for audience members.

One game they sometimes play is Build-A-Title, where they start with a movie title (for example The Empire Strikes Back) and add movie titles to the front and back of it (one move would be The Empire Strikes Back to the Future) and they keep going until they get to a stopper on both ends.

The other game is the world famous Leonard Maltin Game, which makes use of the Leonard Maltin App on Doug's iPhone (formerly they used his movie guide in book form). one player chooses a category, then a year, a few clues are given from the review, and the number of names that Len lists. Players then 'bid' on how few names they need from the list, starting at the bottom, to name the movie, until one player challenges another to name it. Players can guess zero names, where they name it based on just the clues given, or negative names, where they have to name the cast as well as the movie, from the highest billed downwards.

Each player plays for a member of the audience (name tags preferred) the winner receives some fabulous prizes and the losers get to decide who Doug calls a shit head at the end of the show.

The guests are always great and range from comedians to actors, past guests include David Cross, Paul F. Tompkins, Weird Al, Chris Hardwick, John Hamm, Elisabeth Shue, and the man himself, Leonard Maltin. Doug has been working on getting John Lithgow on this year, as he was in the movie 2010. Apparently he's been in communication with Mr. Lithgow and he sounds interested, but as of now he has yet to appear on the show.

Most episodes are free, there have been a couple that there's a charge for, including the recent Leonard Maltin Tournament of Champions, but they are well worth the price. I would definitely recommend this podcast to anyone and everyone.

Total Score:

Frequency of Episodes: 9/10 The only thing that would be better would be if it were daily, but I can't really complain about a new hour show a week.

Content: 10/10 Always funny, great guests, and the games are a blast to listen to.

Audio Quality: 10/10 Sounds great, Doug's good about making sure his guests stay on mike, and don't do too much visual comedy.

Re-listenability: 7/10 Still enjoyable to listen to, but on repeat listens the games loose some tension, I haven't listened to it again on my own, but I have relistened to a few with and they're still good at least the second time around.

Value: 10/10 The weekly show is free, and the bonus episodes are definitely worth it

Total Score: 46/50

Happy Monkey!
