SAW 3-D

Advertised as The Final Chapter, the latest in the SAW series came out this past weekend,
SPOILERS AWAIT WITHIN

So here we are, finally made it, the SAW franchise has come to an end (so they say) and with it comes my final SAW review (we'll see how that goes too, i might do another on this one for next years rewatch)

Picking up just after the end of the original we finally get to see the return of Dr. Gordan, who managed to survive long enough to cauterize his leg on a steaming hot pipe.

We catch up with hoffman and jill after the end of SAW 6, but instead of jill becoming a force to be reackoned with as the true heir of her ex, she becomes a frightened scream queen, running scared from hoffman, which i think totally destroyed her character.

Theres also a new game afoot for jigsaw exploiter bobby darin, who has been making a living selling his story about surviving one of jigsaws games, only problem is he never played, until now. Similar to 3, 4, and 6, bobby travels room to room trying to help other people out of traps. he doesn't rescue anybody, i liked a lot of the traps, but he just didnt have enough time to complete any of them successfully, he came very close a few times, but couldnt pull it off, i imagine that was hoffmans doing.

Hoffman goes on a killing rampage to get to jill, finally cornering her in the poliece station where he puts her in amandas trap that was sitting in the evidence room, jill doesnt have a way out, so we get to see it destroy her, a sad end to a wasted character.

Just when we think hes going to get away, hoffman is knocked out by not one but three people in jigsaw's pig masks, the leader turns out to be none other than doctor gordan, who chains hoffman back in the original bathroom, with no escape in sight, gordan says the now famous "game over" before sealing hoffman in his tomb.

We see a quick flashback showing that doctor gordan has been helping jigsaw ever since his 'rehabilitation' performing a lot of the surgeries like the key behind the eye in saw 2, and that john told him who would need to pay if anything happened to jill.

While it was a little predictible that gordan would turn out to be working with kramer, i liked that it took that turn, i liked that it opened a new door to be used if they do another one, and i'm curious who his two pig headed assistants are.

That being said i felt like a lot of the violence took the turn to cartoony (although the bit with the fish hook had me cringing), and the new poliece guy after hoffman, the IA guy was pretty rediculous "you're crazy, crazy! crazy!" and i imagine that a lot of that came from the directer being forced to do it (he was going to do the sequal to paranormal activity, but lionsgate pulled his contract and made him direct this one, which i imagine was more of an attempt to thwart paranormal activity 2 rather than help SAW 7, after paranormal activity kicked SAW 6's butt last year) my last bit of dissappointment was with how little tobin bell was in the movie. While i understand the need to move on from a character that was killed  off 4 movies ago, his presence was missed.

Anyways, if you're a fan of the franchise go see it in the theatre if you can, the 3-D was fun, so i'd say it's worth it.
